Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week: ThisThatBeauty Recaps - CVS Reinventing Beauty Lounge

#NYFW
While covering shows for Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week, I made regular beauty pit stops at Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory. This deluxe apartment in the sky was my daily fashion week retreat! Each day the Luxe Laboratory featured fun events, stylish products, and fab food. More to come on some of the cool daily events at the Luxe Laboratory…

For my first trip to Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory, I visited the CVS Reinventing Beauty Lounge for a manicure. The color du jour was Sally Hansen Opulent Cloud.

While at the CVS Reinventing Beauty Lounge, I saw bella after bella get Opulent Cloud manicures...and the color looked great on everyone. This universally flattering shade is a recessionista’s dream. Hit up your local CVS and buy a bottle!

Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week: ThisThatBeauty Recaps NYFW – Day 1

#NYFW

The first day of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week started with a bang! Normally I cover Fashion Week as press…this includes attending the shows, events, parties, and covering backstage hair/makeup. This year was quite different.

In addition to all of the above responsibilities...I was also Creative Director of Makeup for a New York Fashion Week Show - the Vessel by Lois Samuels

Working in this capacity was a great honor and a dream come true. As Creative Director of Makeup, it was my responsibility to design the runway makeup look, partner with the makeup sponsor to select colors, and lead a talented team of artists. Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics was the makeup sponsor…they are truly an amazing partner!

This is the face chart that I designed for the makeup look.

Lois Samuels asked me to create a look that matched the feel of her collection. I drew inspiration from the color palette and structure of Lois’ clothing line. In designing the makeup look, I introduced the idea of daytime smoky eyes, soft flushed cheeks, and a semi matte lip. To reflect the masculinity and menswear inspiration of Lois' collection, we decided to go with with strong contoured cheeks and a well groomed brow. The skin was fresh and dewy.

The core products included:

All Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics

  • Natural Mineral Foundation
  • Hi Def Hydrating Mineral Powder
  • Liquid Mineral Foundation
  • Mineral Primer
  • Ultimate Concealer
  • Mineral Rice Setting Powder
  • Mineral Radiance in Sundance
  • Minerals in the Mist
  • Eye shadows - Merlot, Storm, Halo, Moonstone
  • Eyeliner in Blackest Black
  • Mascara in Onyx
  • Brow Artiste
  • Crushed Mineral Blush in Plumberry and Sherbet
  • Liner in Pout
  • Lipstick in Barely Nude and Cuvee
  • Lipshine in Crush
  • Lipgloss in Praline

Here's the day in pictures:

Lois made it to the pages of WWD. Yay!

I call this shot "the calm before the storm".
Here I am with Jorge Ramon, Celebrity Stylist and Lead Wardrobe Stylist for the show.

My two assistants, Alcillena and Jasmine. I would not have made it through the day with out them!

Early as heck..setting up makeup

Here I am sorting products for the makeup station

Here I am signing the official face chart for the show...awww, I think I might frame this bad boy!

Quick meeting with Orlando Santiago and Valerie Hernandez to explain my makeup look.
Both Orlando and Val are master makeup artists. I was honored to work with them!

Fully stocked makeup station. The makeup team consisted of six artists plus lil ol me :)

Here I am with Celebrity Manicurist Myrdith Leon McCormack. She was the Lead Artist for nails. Myrdith was extremely busy this year covering nails for many shows. Check out her line of nail polish. Go Myrdith!

Here I am with the effervescent Val Hernandez (for Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics)

We met last season at NYFW and just keep bumping into one another.
She's ridiculously cool!
Chatting about something exciting, I'm sure!

WNBA Legend Kym Hampton

It’s been a while since I’ve done a good old-fashioned Face Of The Day post, so I figure I’ll jump back into the saddle with a Celebrity Face of The Day look.

I was recently asked to join the glam squad of WNBA Legend, Kym Hampton. As Kym’s Makeup Artist and Wardrobe Stylist, my job is to prep Kym‘s makeup and wardrobe for public appearances.

In addition to being a phenomenal athlete, Kym has an amazing voice. She recently sang the national anthem for a Liberty vs. Mystics game…and I did her makeup!

Here’s the look I created for Kym (ignore me peeking over Kym's shoulder :)

Here are the products used --

Skin Prep:

  • Embroylisse  Lait Crème Concentre
  • Iman Under Cover Agent Oil Control Primer (Shouts to Kelly Epps/ The MakeupLoft for turning me on to this product)

Face:

  • Make Up For Ever HD Microperfecting Primer in Caramel
  • Cinema Secrets Foundation in 200-02 (same shade as Ms ThisThatBeautyJ)
  • NARS The Multiple in Maui/ Palm Beach (I used both shades)
  • MAC Bronzing Powder in Refined Deeper Bronze
  • Youngblood Mineral Rice Setting Powder in Dark

Eyes:

  • Urban Decay Primer Potion in Sin
  • Face Drama eye shadows Sugar Cookie, Moody, and Majestic
  • MAC eye shadows in Nocturnal and Violet Trance

Upper liner:

  • Eve Pearl Glamour Jet Black mascara used as eyeliner

Lower liner:

  • Face Drama eye shadow in Majestic
  • Face Drama eye shadow in Moody

Brows:

  • Eve Pearl Salmon Concealer as brow highlight – mid tone shade
  • Face Drama eye shadow in Exquisite as highlight
  • Face Drama eye shadow in Chocolate Dreams and brow filler

Mascara:

  • Eve Pearl Glamour Jet Black
Lips:
  • Eve Pearl Stardust
  • Eve Pearl Moonlight Kiss
Here we are at the end of the night. We're both a little shiny at this point...but Kym still looks like a certified banger!

So what do you think of Kym's look?
She loved it...said it felt pretty and polished, yet not overdone:)

Earth tones are easy

Neutral makeup doesn't have to be boring makeup. My favorite look (current fav because it changes all the time:)) is a neutral eye and a strong lip. This combo is super easy to pull off and the results are stunning.

Earth tones make for amazing neutrals. Many women find earth tones very easy to work with because they're basically fool proof and the shades are not intimidating. Check out some of ThisThatBeauty's favorite of the moment earth tone eye colors.

New Product From Japan

I was first introduced to Koh Gen Do at The Makeup Show NYC.
They are a Japanese based skincare/ cosmetics company that was founded out of the owner's (an actress) quest for makeup that protected her skin from dryness and exhaustion brought on by harsh conditions. Her search inspired the creation of Koh Gen Do. Koh Gen Do Cleansing Spa Water is a gentle eye makeup remover thats effective at removing stubborn waterproof makeup. Cleaning Spa Water is oil free and safe for contact lens wearers.

Additional info from Koh Gen Do:
From the Yumura Hot Springs in Izumo, Japan, comes pure water, rich with skin-absorbing nutrients, to replenish and rejuvenate as it cleanses.
White Birch Sap, harvested only three weeks in early spring, contributes an abundance of minerals and xylitol as it lifts off makeup, oils and residue. No washing or rinsing required!

Perfectly convenient for on-location makeup artists and busy on-the-go women.
Oil-free. Alcohol-free. Safe for contact lens wearers.
